Colonia Ulpia Traiana Poetovio is strategically placed on a crossroads that may take traders in five major directions. Its roads head to Flavia Solva or Virunum, to Aquileia and the Adriatic, to Carnuntum and the Amber Road, or deeper into Illyria along the Danubian frontier. This central location, of course, has led to the city being sacked by the Huns.
