As the Army of Marcellinus Slavenicus departs from Ravenna, a disturbing event occurs. When standing before his army to announce their departure towards Mediolanum rather than into Pannonia, to defend Italy against the Huns, the legions present begin to yell 'Caesar! Caesar!' Though Marcellinus protests, of course, due to his barbarian heritage, the event remains present in the minds of the whole army, including the barbarian foederati. All are fond of Marcellinus, and would like to see him elevated to share power with Theodosius. The western legions would even like to see him elevated to Augustus and named as Honorius' heir. For the time being, the hushed talk is about whether the son of a man of Scythian extraction (a Goth, to be specific, but Romans are fond of historical regional namings) could ever wield imperial power. True, he was not from an old Roman family, but he was born on Roman soil and lived under Roman laws, did that not make him as Roman as a Numidian or a Syrian? His Latin wasn't the most polished, but they were after a soldier, not a poet.
