The Ulaid
Ruler: Niall Noígíallach (Niall of the Nine Hostages)
Rí Ruirech na an Ulaid, Ard Rí na Tara (King of Kings of the Ulaid, High-King of Tara)
The Ulaid are a formidable confederation of tribes from the North of Hibernia. Niall’s father Eochaid was elected to the High-Kingship of Tara before appointing his youngest son Niall to be his heir. Although the Hibernian warriors of the time are fairly homogenous (armed either with a seven foot long spear, short sword and leather shield, or with bows), Niall himself commands the largest army in Ireland, alongside a relatively sizeable raiding fleet manned by experienced killers.
Uí Connachta
Ruler: Medb
Rí Ruirech na an Uí Connachta (Queen of Kings of the Connachta)
Medb is an elderly woman, but also fearsome soldier, having made making her name in wars against the Ulaid. Her clan, the Uí Connachta, are one of the oldest clans in Hibernia and have subjugated the clans of the West over many years, allowing their leaders to claim the title Rí Ruirech (King of Kings). Alongside the mainstay Hibernian warriors, the Uí Connachta possess small bands of skilled raiders who are particularly accustomed to mountainous terrain and familiar with stealth tactics.
Cruíthann
Ruler: Caipre Riata
Ruiri na an Cruíthann (King of the Cruíthann)
The Cruíthann (painted men) are the only Kingship in the North that has not been subjugated by the Ulaid. Although culturally Gaelic, they share many customs with the Picts across the sea, most notably the ritual tattooing of their bodies. Probably the weakest of the Irish Kingdoms, Riata commands a small army, and a few raiding vessels. Their forces are primarily made up of small raiding groups, rather than a larger, better equipped, units.
Mumu
Ruler: Crimthann
Rí Ruirech na Mumu (King of Kings of Mumu)
Crimthann is middle-aged man who is second only in power to the Ulaid, who they are openly hostile to. Although the land in the South is difficult to cultivate, they benefit from European traders who find their small ports and harbours to be easily accessible. Their army, not as large as that of the Connachta or the Ulaid, is better equipped. Despite this, they only have a small fleet and few raiders.
Laighín
Ruler: Crimthann mac Énnae
Ruiri na Laighín (King of Laighín)
The Laighín are another minor Kingdom, though they command a small confederacy, Énnae does not have quite enough power to title himself King of Kings. Though they are traditionally a tributary of Tara, the Laighín have ceased to pay their tithes to the High-King, putting themselves into open hostility with the Ulaid. Laighín has a small force on land, but possess a large fleet of raiding vessels.
