The chiefs of the Onogurs, Utigurs and Kutrigurs are gathered for a meeting on a plain somewhere in modern Hungary. The Hunnic or local leaders of several subject peoples are also gathered. There is expected to be many days and nights of feasting, merriment, wrestling, horsemanship, music, and storytelling. This is an infrequent opportunity to mix with such a huge variety of fellow Huns, altogether in one place, and it is not wasted on talk alone. Marriages are made, oaths sworn and bonds built. Rivalries, too, are practiced or formed, with old grudges and new given space to air.
There is a darker matter at hand, though, that forms the serious substance of the meeting. The Huns are restless, there are slights to be returned, and there is money to be made. The tribal chiefs deliberate on the target of the year's raids (which are expected to be large). Many call for a westward ride, to force the Sclavenes to bend the knee, where others look hungrily across the Danube towards Roman territory. It is well known that a Roman raid provides the most profit for least risk, since the Romans are wealthy enough to pay off the Huns and provide all the loot they need without the Huns having to do the actual hard work of taking it.
In the end, Uldin decides on a compromise. There is to be a crossing of the Danube lead by the Utigurs and Onogurs, and a raid westward lead by the Kutrigurs. Some Germans and Slavs will support each objective.
The whole world should feel the power of the Huns, it is decided.
