King Ataulf remains loyal to the Theodosian dynasty, for some unknown reason, and seizes control of the southern peninsula, where the Goths had been languishing for some time. He advances northwards to defend the passage from Rome to Ravenna, the key to power in Italy. He halts his advance there, however, choosing not to directly challenge the Slavs. The Visigoths are in a position to relieve the siege of Ravenna if they so chose.

Sclavenic forces set about scouting the area and ascertaining the whereabouts of the three tribal components of the Visigothic army.
Whilst doing this they put to the torch every village and field of grain in the area, they poison wells and send waves of refugees heading towards Visigothic lines.

The Visigoths let the refugees pass, intending to abandon their position in southern Italia. The scouts that make it back, report that the Visigoths have converged as a unified army at Ancona, whence they march to Ariminium (Rimini). At Rimini they fortify their position, adding a line of palisades outside the city walls as an additional layer of defence. They are accompanied by Roman engineers, and seem to be getting some level of supply from the Adriatic. The group of scouts that dared the closest venture towards Rimini say that Germanic pirates are supplying the city, and Ravenna.
