We Do Not Sow
Objective: Successfully raid the coasts of Britannia, including the Isles of Pictland, the Kingdom of Alt Clut, the Kingdom of the North, Deva Victrix (in Pagenses), Dumnonia and Venta (Silurum).
Description: Piracy is one of the most natural means of producing wealth, and one of the best opportunities for the young warriors to whet their blades. By successfully showing dominance over the Irish Sea all in Britannia will come to know of Niall as High King over all the Irish, and to fear his party.
Result: The Deisi settled in Wales will pay tribute to the High King, realising his power extends over seas, and bands of warriors will join Niall's host, including some from across the sea. In addition, Irish settlers may become more common in Britannia.
---------------------------------
Unite Ulaid [COMPLETED]
Objective: Conquer the painted ones and incorporate them into your kingdom.
Description: How can one claim to be High King if one cannot even control all of one kingdom? The presence of defiant tribes in the heart of Ulaid is an affront to your lordship. See them bend the knee or severed at the kneck.
Result: The lands of the Painted Men will become part of Ulaid, and the defeated exiles will seek their fortune elsewhere.
--------------------------------
Have a Cow [COMPLETED]
Objective: Defeat Laighin in battle.
Description: The king of Laighin seems to have a grudge against his own High King, and refuses to pay tribute as a sign of his subordination. By force of arms if necessary, we must receive what is owed to us.
Reward: Laighin pays tribute and becomes loyal for the lifetime of Niall.
------------------------------
In Hoc Signo Vinces: Part I [INVALIDATED]
Objective: Convert to Christianity.
Description: The Christian God is said to be powerful, and he has supported conquerors in the past. Maybe we could adopt the mantle of soldier-missionary, and bring God to the lands of the Gaels, as well as the primacy of Ulaid.
Result: Ulaid will become Insular Christian, Pelagian or Nicene, depending on preference. Unlocks a mission chain of violent state-driven conversion.
------------------------------
Paddy Power: Part I [COMPLETED]
Objective: Allow Padraig (Patrick, Patricius) to establish monastic communites and places of Christian worship in Ulaid>
Description: Padraig is always full of plans for a Christian Ireland. Despite your reservations, you see no harm in him pursuing his goals.
Result: Padraig will be allowed to freely proselytise the Irish, slowly converting Ulaid's people to Christianity. This unlocks a mission chain of largely peaceful conversion, leading to options to convert, revive paganism, or syncretise the two faiths. This mission unlocks both pagan reform and Christian conversion options.
-----------------------------
Anointed King (Paddy Power)
Objective: Have a King of Ulaid crowned in a Christian ceremony, anointed by a Christian priest.
Description: Fashions may come and go, and traditions evolve. When the High Kings of Tara are anointed by holy balm, administered by a priest descended by the laying-on-of-hands from the miraculous power of Jesus Christ, it will mark the beginning of a new age - of Christian kingship. Ulaid may have Christian kings and pagan kings, but a Christian coronation ceremony will help mark the kingship itself as Christian.
Result: Ulaid becomes a formally Insular Christian kingdom, invalidating the Arch-Pagan mission chain.
----------------------------
Papa Don't Preach
Objective: Convert to Insular Christianity.
Description: You are compelled by the teachings of Christian missionaries, and decide to become part of a wider religious community encompassing the British isles and beyond.
Result: The King of Ulaid becomes Christian, the faith grows quicker, more monasteries are established and relations improve with British kings. Raiding fellow Christians will be viewed dimly, however.
----------------------------
The Arch-Pagan [COMPLETED]
Objective: Declare war on Christianity
Requires: A Christian minority in Ulaid.
Description: The spread of a new faith is frightening and worrying. The old ways must be defended, and the Christ-god must be expelled from Ireland like the poisonous serpent it is.
Result: Ulaid will become hostile to Christians, burning their monasteries and sacrificing their priests to pagan gods. A large band of zealous raiders, 5,000 strong, will join you in the last gasp of paganism.
---------------------------
The Apostate
Objective: Organise the Druidic faith in opposition to Christianity.
Requires: The King must be a Christian (and convert back to Celtic Paganism). There must be a Christian minority in Ulaid. There must be an established monastic tradition.
Description: The Christians have one church and one god, whereas we are divided and disparate. There are as many differing versions of the same gods, as there are a multitude of gods. In order to fight back against Christianity, we must be able to offer a strong charitable Druidic alternative by beginning a period of reformation, where the Druidic order will be organised as an official Christian-inspired Church hierarchy, our many disparate traditions shall be codified and literally written in stone, grander pagan centres of worship shall be patronised, and these centres should be the focus of a new wave of learning, crafts and charity, taking care of the poor and destitute.
Results: An organised Druidic faith is established, which will evolve largely under the guidance of the High King or a Chief Druid.
----------------------------
True High King
Objective: Have no other independent Irish state that does not recognise your over-kingship.
Description: The High Kings of Tara hold moral authority over the entire isle of Eire, but many rival kings continue to contest this claim in practice. We must ensure that every Irish kingdom recognises the High King of Tara as sovereign.
Reward:
- The ability to recruit a new elite type of noble Kerns.
- Unlocks several unification options.
