Raiding
Raiding is an alternative to invasion, but follows the same movement restrictions. You may raid coastal provinces or areas that border you on land.
The defenders will be able to muster all their retinues and professional armies located in that province, but will not have time to raise levies. Levies that are already raised and are stationed in the province will defend against raiders. You can raise levies in a year that you anticipate raiders solely to defend against them should they attack, but levies raised for multiple years in a row will cause as much damage to your economy as a raider might have, so it is not a viable tactic to always have raised levies. Undefended provinces may see some levies rise up to defend their property and family, but will rarely be significant enough to defeat the raiders.
When raiding coastal provinces, you may raid with the crews in addition to other forces. Units with mention of 'pirate', 'raider' or light in their description are more effective at raiding, since there is a limited window before resistance can be effectively mounted.
The size of your army and wealth of the target province effects how much you may loot, and you are expected to only keep a fifth of all spoils in order to maintain your reputation. If you distribute less than roughly 80% of all loot then you will be considered as avaricious and will not attract many new followers. If you give out significantly less than is expected you will start to see your retinue abandon you for more gainful employment. Every time you share out enough of the spoils, you will increase your fame and reputation and will find you attract more followers, without having to pay for their recruitment.
Piracy
Ships may also be used to harass traffic on the sea. This will gain you a share of the treasure, as well as costing the victim-nations in terms of trade. There are no sea provinces in the game as forums, but zones are considered to roughly consist of the following:
If you wish to raid one of these, specify the sea your pirates will be operating in, in your own kingdom's forum if it is a sea you border, or in an enemy kingdom's forum if it is outside of the seas you border (and thus your supply range) and you are targeting their trade primarily.
All factions that profit directly from these trade routes will be effected. For example, raiding the Atlantic to stop Mediterranean goods reaching Britain will also effect those sending the trade ships.
You can also have your navy patrol your shorelines to protect against pirates. Simply post this in your ledger or kingdom forum to ensure all are aware. Any pirates or raiders would then have to get past your navy to reach your shores. This is less effective the longer your shoreline is.

- The Irish Sea (up to the north of Scotland)
- The British Channel
- The Atlantic (the west-coast of Ireland, France and the north and west coast of Spain, as well as north-west Africa up to the pillars of Hercules)
- Western Mediterranean (from the pillars of Hercules to the straits of Sicily, includes the waters of Sardinia and Corsica)
- The Adriatic (The east coast of Italy down to the 'heel' and the west coast of the Balkan peninsula down to modern Albania)
- The Aegean (the water between Greece and Anatolia, ending with an imaginary line marked by Rhodes and Crete, includes the sea of Marmara)
- The Eastern Mediterranean (from the Straits of Sicily to the Levantine coast, not including the Adriatic or Aegean
- The Black Sea
