Honest Ivaylo Sviatislav was feeling good. He may not have won the battle and been crowned Emperor, but he was alive! It had also been quite fun to watch Perun induce toga shitting fear in the Romans.
Things were changing in the Sclavenic camp. The adoption of Christianity had not been widely popular, but the bang with which Ivaylo and his chiefs returned to the Pagan fold had set things straight. The Bishop of Milan had only stopped screaming when someone had cut his tongue. Now they were after an altogether more attractive victim.
Rome was vulnerable, stripped of its garrison and weak. The Sclavenes would have fun burning their christian idols and pathetic priests, this city would be a might tribute to Perun and his brave men.
The Slavs had been swift on the march and left little in the way of food and water behind them, there was no way back and any army seeking to follow would find themselves confronted by corpses and starvation.
With Roman armies far off and the city still damaged from the sack of 410 the Sclavenes move quickly. troops surround the ancients city and cavalry scour the countryside for fleeing officials and any food or gold. A message is sent into the city, the inhabitants are to open the gates and allow the Slavs in. If they do this in 24 hours then the people will be spared, but the treasuries will be emptied, the grain carried away and the armoury taken.
If they fail to do as instructed then the city will be stormed, the women will be ravaged and taken into slavery, the children will be thrown from the walls and the men will be taken as slaves if they survive. The civic buildings and temples will be burned and torn down, the wells poisoned and the earth salted. Every cat, dog, goat and mule will be slaughtered. No mercy will be shown.
The Heruli are sent to act as a rearguard against any relief force. If the gates are not opened then they will be taken by force.
