The armies of Sassanid Persia are as varied as their enemies. They hire Turkic and other other steppe peoples for skirmishes along their northern borders, supported by 'Kurds' and Iranian nomads. Against Rome they field armies of Eastern infantry, drawn from Mesopotamia, Gilan, Tabaristan, Persia and from further east. They use mercenaries from the Caucasus, India, Eurasian Steppes and Arabia. Although their infantry are less impressive and professional than those of Rome, the Sassanids cavalry back a kick like no other, with professional heavy knights supported by the state, superheavy cataphracts, steppe archers, and the revived Immortals - now a deadly force of cataphracts held in reserve until needed for a decicive charge. The Sassanids encourage their people to be settled and urban, not to be soldiers ready for battle. With the exception of Azadan nobles endowed with royal estates, the Sassanids may not readily call upon levied armies.

They provide additional generals but are also fiercely defensive of their position.

Opposes any attempt to increase taxation and decrease their class. Can support usurpers.
Magi Faction: Those who support the interests of the priestly class, the Magi Faction are central to propagating the ideology of Eranshahr that keeps the empire together, but they also have their own interests. The Magi seek to persecute followers of heretical sects such as Manichaeism, and only tolerate Christians so long as they remain loyal to the empire.

Increases discontent in persecuted minorities.

The faction can be dangerous and divisive, but does please the large Christian population of Mesopotamia.
Contents the Christian populace of the Empire and improves diplomatic options with Rome.
Can cause resentment amongst the Zoroastrian priests and nobility, and if left to get too powerful may start attacking 'pagan' temples.

More effective generals and opportunities to recruit free units.
