One fateful day, as the sun shone brightly in the sky and the Slavic market conducted its vibrant trade in the various fora of the Lombard capital, a fateful decree was read. Roman legionaries and Lombard foederati encircled any forum that held such a market before the announcement was read.
"These being the words of Lethuc, King of the Lombards and of the Rugi, Patrician of Illyria, Rex Pannonicum,
The Slavs which have for many years, by the grace of my rule, been allowed free travel and the right to trade wherever Lombards are present, who live beyond the law of the kingdom, protected only as the property of the king, whose grace prevents them from receiving harm from those jealous of their good fortune, shall henceforth have their liberties rescinded. Any man, woman or child bearing the name of Slav, or belonging to a Slav household, is to be seized, bound in irons, and presented to the king. Any Slav found in the Kingdom of Pannonia or in a civitas under protection of King Lethuc, is to be made the personal property of the King."
The Slavs are to lose their freedom, and their families are quickly rounded up for transportation. Just over a thousand Slavs are captured, although many more manage to escape to their old homeland, avoiding Lombard border guards as they go.
